Kayak Fishing – The Minimalist Aproach

When I set out to kayak fish, I frequently load my kayak with quite a bit of gear.  Everything from a cooler to 3 fishing poles to a milk crate full of accessories.  Everything I put on my kayak has a purpose and gets used on most trips, that is until recently.

On a Wednesday I found myself having a short window of opportunity to get my kayak in the water for some fishing, all-in-all I had about 5 hours.  In that 5 hours I had to load the gear in my car, the kayak on top and get to my fishing hole (a 40 minute trip both ways) so I decided to go as minimal as possible.  I loaded the kayak, the paddle, an anchor, a life vest, 1 fishing rod and a few lures.  This was by FAR the least I had ever brought on the water with me.

Once on the water I realized how much easier it was to paddle with very little in my way and the kayak weighing about 100lbs less.  I also found myself working hard at finding the right technique for the lure I was using (I had fewer options, so I tried harder with the ones I had).  Overall I found the experience to be quite relaxing, even though I knew I was on a restricted time frame.    I have found that I enjoy the minimalist approach, and will be incorporating it into a few of my upcoming kayak fishing trips!
